Behind The Chair or, The Seth Files

(I'm experimenting with newsletter titles)

Alright! All...Right. All right? You good?

I hope you’re well.

Let’s start with the housekeeping.

*Kyle informed me that I neglected to include a booking link last month, so do it here! I do get distracted sometimes.

*I’ll be taking holiday time from Aug 8-18 to head to BC and rest up before the back-to-school craziness, so plan accordingly! Gord only knows what new, demanding style those wacky kids will be sporting this year.

*Free parking in back, along the wall beside my sweet, sweet Honda Civic.

*I may need to bump you 15 mins forward or back to fit in more cuts, so when you get the notification that I’ve done so, if you’re on a tight schedule, let me know and I’ll happily work around it.

*And for the love of Pete, please put it in your calendar. The number of people who have been coming in a week early is astounding. Check and confirm the date!

A note on cleanliness: this morning, immediately after I ate breakfast, I went to put product in my hair, and as I went to spread the clay on my hands, I noticed some Nutella on my hand. I didn’t want to waste the product (read: I'm frugal) so Nutella clay pomade it is. Maybe it masked some of the greys? Anyway, a quick glimpse into how I live my life.

New Product(s)!

Groom offers refillable deodorant cases and refills, so if you want to save the environment one plastic case at a time, I have some for sale, along with refills. The case is an initial investment of (I so hate that term, but...) $20, and the refills are $11. I use it, and you don’t smell me when my armpit is hovering over you while washing your hair, do you? Wait, you don't, do you?

I also have another of their products you can ask about in person.

Seth’s Soapbox

Next weekend is Father’s Day. Call him and catch up if he deserves it. Even if he doesn’t, take the high road and do it. Cat’s in The Cradle, and all that.

If you’re a dad, skip the golf and go hang with your kids.

We all heard of the schoolyard fights recently which are apparently on the rise, and I’m going to say something that people think but don’t want to say out loud: that’s parenting. You know how if someone says something racist you should say, “hey man, that’s not cool”? It’s okay to call out someone for being a subpar parent. Are they working away a month at a time and home for 3 days while their wife is also working too much? Dude, you gotta be there for your kids. Yeah, you’re providing, but kids need their parents there to be with them and listen to them more than they need a new Xbox and more than you need a new truck. And sure, it will probably be listening to things you don’t care about, but it matters to them.

Have the hard talks with your friends. I respect how hard you work, but the real work is lacking. Your kids need you more than your boss does, and it's way more important. Same goes for someone who works 9-5 M-F but goes out 5 nights a week, even if it’s for various charity functions. Yeah, you’re doing good for the community, but do better at home. I’m not aiming to denigrate anyone’s work, I just don’t want my kid to be the one on the receiving end of some neglected kid’s fists. So as a member of this society, I reserve the right. Yeah, someone has to do that work, but the young and childless people can do it, and the retired ones can do the charity work (when they're not beefing up their grandparent duties). To hell with LinkedIn.

Our job is to make sure the next generation is safer and happier than we are. And that’s genuine happiness, not fleeting, ephemeral happiness like more screen time. If we don’t want kids to be safe and happy, what are we even doing here?

As always, I’m reminded of a song, this time it’s Permanent by The Milk Carton Kids where the chorus sings:

Everybody loves something new

‘Cause you can open it and plug it in

And it feels like a good night’s sleep

Like the girl you like paid you a compliment

They can keep the change and the can keep ‘em

coming they can talk to who’s listening

I’m still looking for something a little more

permanent

Oof. Got a little preachy there, Seth. Well what's a soapbox for?!

Speaking of which, someone out there is a trillionaire now, and there are over 1,000 billionaires in North America alone. Just a friendly reminder that money isn’t created or made, it’s transferred. That means the more they have, and they always want more, it can only mean it comes from the rest of us. But sure, keep fighting about separation, pride flags, and immigrants.

Nutella is not for external use.

Lastly

There's a lot of hype about Data Centres, with a bunch being built in AB, including one in our vicinity. Here is a link showing the centres that are being built in AB and their impact on noise, air quality, jobs, water, and electricity. (scroll down to I Understand, then choose Red Deer and AHI Hub of Innovation to see how it affects us)

Ugh, these used to be funny. I'll try harder next time. Did I say that last time too?

Anyhoo,

Love you, you're handsome, and you're doing just fine.

Seth
